When Systems Just Work

Edition 27 | 24 March 2026

Welcome to The Perspective. Each week, I share a small set of reflections on work, leadership, and clarity, not to add more noise, but to slow things down just enough to think properly. Some ideas are practical, others more reflective, but all are chosen with the same intent: to help us navigate complexity with a steadier hand.

This week’s note centres on something we rarely stop to consider: the systems that keep things moving in the background. The ones that don’t announce themselves, but quietly shape how businesses operate and how we experience everyday life.

The Infrastructure We Don't See

Courier vans are everywhere.

Collecting parcels from offices. Dropping off boxes at apartment buildings. Moving between cities quietly, all day.

Over the past few months, I’ve seen this more closely while sending copies of my book around the country. Using The Courier Guy, I’ve even come to recognise the driver who regularly collects from me. If I time it right, a book can move from Johannesburg to Cape Town in less than two days.

That’s easy to take for granted.

But it’s also a reminder of how much modern life depends on systems that most of us rarely think about.

Businesses rely on courier networks to move documents, products, and equipment. Individuals rely on them for everything from online purchases to something as simple as sending a gift.

We tend to notice these systems only when they fail. When they work, they fade into the background.

In many ways, courier companies form part of the invisible infrastructure of the economy. They keep things moving, not through headlines or announcements, but through consistency.

And that consistency matters more than we often realise.

On My Desk

Coffee is always on the desk.

But this time of year in Johannesburg changes it slightly. The mornings are a little cooler, the air has that early hint of autumn, and you can feel winter slowly on its way.

It makes that first cappuccino feel just a bit more necessary.

Sitting down, opening the laptop, and easing into the day.

No big insight this week. Just a small shift in season.

Closing Perspective

It’s easy to focus on what is visible. Announcements. Strategies. Big moments.

But most systems don’t succeed because of what is said. They succeed because of what works, repeatedly, over time.

The courier arrives. The package moves. The system holds.

Quietly.

That’s where trust is built.

And in many ways, that’s the real test: not whether something sounds right, but whether it continues to work when no one is paying attention.

Keep thinking. Move forward.
